From copilots to autonomous agents: an AI to AGI maturity model

Enterprise AI matures in four stages: Assist (copilots inside existing tools), Automate (task and voice agents that finish work), Orchestrate (multi-agent workflows on industry-trained models) and Reason (cross-domain systems that plan across functions). Each stage needs stronger evaluation and governance than the last.

Assist

Copilots draft and suggest; people decide and act. Value comes from speed on individual tasks.

Automate

Agents complete bounded tasks end to end, such as answering service calls or reconciling records, with approvals for exceptions.

Orchestrate

Several agents coordinate across a workflow, often on smaller models trained for the industry to control cost and quality.

Reason

Systems plan across domains and adapt to new goals. This is where research is heading, and where governance matters most.
